Hey There! I'm Leigh.
I’m a professional Singer/Dancer/Actress, certified Holistic Health Coach and Reiki Practitioner.
If you’re a fellow pro female in the trenches at auditions, on stage, on the road or at sea in show business…
You are in the right place, my friend.
I teach female performers like you how to rock your best body ONstage, while being your best you OFFstage.
My weapons of choice for staying healthy and sane in this weird-ass gigging lifestyle are good old fashioned killer nutrition through whole foods and/or supplementation and loving self-care practices like mindfulness and movement.
My 14 year full-time performing career has taken me on fantastic adventures to over 70 different countries…
So I KNOW how crazy stressful and challenging it can be to take care of yourself (body, mind and spirit) when you’re living out of suitcases, at the mercy of the ship or hotel buffet, eating out with you cast, dealing with insane performance and rehearsal schedules, desperately trying to avoid injuries and illnesses so your paycheck doesn’t make a sudden and dramatic exit stage left…
But it IS possible.
Trust, me… I’ve done the hard work for you and I am happy to share what I’ve learned with you right here in my little corner of the interwebs.
So, How Did I Get Here?
While I’ve never been somebody who has ever struggled with maintaining a healthy weight, back in 2015, I finally admitted to myself that I’d been carrying around an extra 15 lbs or so that were nowhere to be found in my 20’s.
While I absolutely fell into the category of what would be considered a “healthy” weight for my size and frame, I knew I needed to make a change due to the unique demands show business requires of the women who grace its stages.
It was a harsh reality, but a reality nonetheless.
I was eating a relatively healthy diet, but clearly, something was amiss.
Not only that, but years of the physical demands of my job performing primarily as a singer/dancer seemed to be catching up with me.
I had aches and pains that were never there before.
And I had injuries that seemed to always be on the brink of happening. Because of this, I couldn’t do high impact training like the distance running I’d done for years as a staple of my fitness routine AND stay physically able to do my job on stage.
If I got injured, I was out of the show.
And out the paycheck.
I couldn’t risk it.
I’d always heard that diet was 80% nutrition and 20% exercise.
Because I wasn’t interested in doing any kind of crash diet, I decided to focus on a shift that was more sustainable.
Simply eat more plants.
As a result I ended up cutting WAY back on things like meat and dairy.
I was feeling so much better putting clean, nutrient dense foods into my body it made me want to make other changes that would help me feel EVEN better and ended up cutting way back on drinking as well.
(If you’ve ever worked on a cruise ship, you know this was a BIG shift.)
Instead of worrying about “training hard”, I stuck to gentle activities like walking and yoga that I knew would be easier on my body to do consistently.
The yoga ended up having a benefit I hadn’t planned on.
It felt so good to move in a way that encouraged me to slow down and discover what it felt like to be PRESENT that it led me to be really focused on self-care.
I began making room in my days for things like regular meditation, journaling and other mindfulness and spiritual practices.
4 months into this shift, I stepped on the scale one day at the shipboard gym and realized I’d lost 12 lbs….without trying to.
I was shocked!
How could it be that gentle exercise, self-care and a focus on plant-based eating could get me results WAY better than I’d ever experienced when I was running regularly?
I went on to lose a total of 18 lbs in about 6 months.
I realized I was onto something...
Health didn’t stop at diet and exercise.
There was a much bigger picture involved.
My curiosity was fully ignited.
I was super passionate about my desire to continue to explore this new paradigm shift I’d experienced.
Eventually, it led me to enroll in an health coach certification program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
My time at IIN painted a beautiful picture of wellness for me that was much larger and more holistic than I could have anticipated.
Health and wellbeing go so much deeper than drinking coconut water, hitting your yoga mat a few times a week and blending kale (or whatever other vegetable happens to be trendy that week) into your morning smoothie…
It’s about cultivating practices that truly nourish you; body, mind and spirit.
And we as performers face such a unique set of challenges in having to maintain a physique that will be flattered by even the most unforgiving costumes while trying to cultivate balance and wellness in our crazy lives (especially when we’re on the road).
I understand those challenges you face because I’ve LIVED them right alongside you.
It’s now my mission to take everything I’ve learned through my time at IIN as well as my own ongoing personal experimentation in self-care, nutrition, mindfulness and movement and share every last bit of it in an effort to make your quality of life as a professional woman in entertainment that much better.
This may be my website… but it exists to serve you.
The "starving artists" who refuse to settle for the cliche and want MORE for their lives...
And the women of show business who are brave enough to make those little shifts that make ALL the difference.
